Trip Report

Red Mountain (Commonwealth Basin)

April 25, 2015. Though we turned around, a good time was had by all. New students including Michael Collins should be given snow scramble credit. There was more new snow than had been reported since last week, as least 6-8 inches on top of old snow. Started out at 8:10 AM. Went up Commonwealth Basin trail, several stream crossings. Turned around at about 5350ft, summit would have been 5890 Ft. New snow on slippery, unstable rock was the problem. Also rated 'considerable' avalanche danger by NWAC and that report seemed true where we turned around. Had a good view most of the way, could see Red Pond below, Kendall Peak, Snoqualmie Mt., Guye Peak most of the way. Snowed hard when we got back to trailhead about 2:30 PM. All enjoyed a good workout, cool views in new snow, with a group of 11 people we took turns breaking trail.
