Trip Report

Mount Rainier/Success Cleaver

A perfect day for our May 7th trip. West Side Road opened a week ago, with Tahoma Creek trail more adventurous than normal (one ~40' section had slope failure below with trail width only ~1-2 ft in places). A few slats missing and cracked on the suspension bridge, and finding/following the snow covered Wonderland Trail (just above the bridge at ~4500') was 'interesting'. Indian Henry's outhouse is free of snow and functional. The snow conditions were great with the cleaver's rocky crest followed in a few spots, even some nice glissades on descent (being mindful of runout). The monster boulder at 8000' (see photos) nicely marks the highest spot. Times were 12 hrs car-to-car, 3 hrs to Indian Henrys and 7hrs to the 'summit'.
