Trip Report

McLane Creek Nature Trail

Although we tried to concentrate on cataloguing mosses and lichens, the highlight of this trip was the sensational Chum Salmon run up McLane Creek. Hundreds of salmon, some 10-15 pounds, in various stages of courage and decay. It was really a stirring sight. This is a great time of year to see it, and Veteran's Day proved to be perfect - weekends would likely be mobbed. Of the few mosses and lichens we were able to positively identify, the most memorable was the Bull's Eye Lichen, and it was unmistakeable. Lots to see for those who are patient - 2 1/4 miles took us a full 3 1/2 hours. A great little group!
