Intermediate Alpine Climb - Mount Adams/Adams Glacier

Successful climb of Adams Glacier

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail is snowfree to just above PCT, then navigated snowfields to camp at Lake 7505. Several tent sites with windbreaks available here.

Lower glacier is straightforward to base of icefall at ~9200 ft. We started up the right side of steep portion of the glacier. Snow conditions were excellent. About 1/3rd of the way up, We encountered an impassable crevasse that pushed us into a broken up section at climber's left. After some routefinding hijinx, we were able to follow a ramp around left of a large serac to easier climbing on steep snow. We used a few pickets and a few screws in this section.

The upper glacier offered fewer obstacles; we end-ran a few crevasses and crossed a few bridges. We stayed on the right portion of the glacier for the entire climb (as opposed to traversing left as described in guidebooks).

North ridge descent is tedious, but not as bad as people would have you believe. A path and cairns marked the way.
