Day Hike - Winchester Mountain

Winchester Mtn. has the most spectacular views of the N. Cascades and Mt. Baker I've ever seen. High Pass is much less crowded and has close up views of Mt. Larrabee.

  • Road recommended for high clearance only
  •   Last 2 1/2 miles of road are difficult with rocks, potholes, big berms and veryyyyyyy tight hairpin curves.  Also difficult to pull over when meeting other cars and this weekend day there were a lot of vehicles.  A Suburu might make it without damage, but better to have a high clearance truck or SUV.  4WD not critical, but it was helpful.

Tread was good and well maintained.  Short section on Winchester was cliffy and might be considered slightly exposed.  Most of the hikers were on the Winchester trail.  We ran out of time and energy on this hot day, but I would recommend continuing past the maintained High Pass Trail to the end of the climber's trail at 6,700' if the party is up to it.  This Sunday there were dozens of cars in the parking lot and many car campers.    A very popular area which should intensify as it has been dominated as one of the best 50 hikes in America by Backpacker Magazine.
