Trip Report

Day Hike - Wallace Falls

The route is scenic the whole way, as the Woody Trail meanders along the Wallace River, through lush vegetation. Beautiful day (~45°) at Wallace Falls (Woody Trail) with a few sprinkles but mostly overcast. The falls were flowing after all the recent rains.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail remains well-maintained and clean all the way.  There were a few muddy areas from the recent rains, but nothing that you couldn't step around or over.  There are tree roots and rocks that one can easily trip on if they are not paying attention.  The platforms and bridges did not seem slippery today.  As you work your way up the path, some of the steps can be almost 2 feet tall; most found poles could help them up or down the steeper steps.  As you approach the Upper Falls, the trail can be narrow in sections, so watch the path since it drops off on the other side.

The first mile is fairly flat.  There are picnic tables and benches to relax at before heading up the hill to the Lower Waterfalls Overview.  The Valley Overview (between Midddle Falls and Upper Falls) offered a nice area for a group to sit and have a snack while enjoying the view.  A few other benches along the way.

The views and forest are beautiful. The emerald green moss, ferns, and firs make a dreary day bright!  The water was flowing fast and loud with all the recent rain.

Distance from Parking Lot to Upper Fall: ~5 miles

Time with stops:  3 hours 30 minutes

Shoes:  With a good grip for wet rocks and wood platforms

Clothing: Layers!  We started cold and then warm, hot, and sweaty as we worked our way up the hill.  The group was adjusting clothing along the path, and when we took a 15-minute break on the way down, everyone got cold again @ 45°F.

Photo Opportunity:  Lots of waterfalls - the 3 main Wallace Falls (lower, middle, and upper), but also smaller ones along the trail.

Time for photos:  We lingered about 5-10 minutes at each Waterfall / Viewpoint (4), and took a longer break (15 min) at the Valley Overlook on the way down.
