Day Hike - Lake Serene

Overall successful hike. Our group of 6 enjoyed the hike and lovely lake despite the massive Saturday crowds. In the future, I will include this hike during the mid-week for some solitude.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Conditions on the trail were rocky, but very well maintained.  The WTA trail maintenance folks put in a lot of time and effort on this trail especially all the stairs!  Lovely weather as the clouds lifted right at noon.  As I mentioned before, there were massive crowds that did not always have great trail etiquette.  Avoid weekends for this hike!

By the time we returned to the parking lot at 3pm, the cars were down the gravel road all the way on Highway 2.  My concern for this popular trail is degradation occurring due to overuse and novice hikers not fully aware of outdoor etiquette.  The amount of trash along the trail was troubling as were the many dogs off-leash.  Shockingly, we encountered smokers hiking, young people playing loud music and unprepared young people.  Furthermore, I implore those in care of our wild to treat it with kindness and respect.  Nevertheless, this remains one of my favorite annual late spring hikes because of how the lake is nestled under Mt. Index.  I will continue to visit and share this special place with others just during the mid-week in the future.
