Trip Report

Day Hike - Cougar Mountain: Big Tree Ridge

Good conditioning hike for a steady upward gain & aerobic workout on well maintained trails

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Tree thinning is underway in the King County Park portion of this hike (about the first 0.3 miles). Entire hillsides of alders and other saplings have been cut - on this day, cut trees still lay on the hillsides. Trails in this section are exposed to the elements - on this day were dry - but could be subject to muddy conditions in the rain.  All other trails on our route were well maintained.

#5 of 8 conditioning hikes: This energetic, capable group started off at a brisk pace (~2.5mph) for the first 0.5 mile. Stopped for a clothing adjustment; then, made it to the high point of the route (~1400', ~2.2mi) in just over an hour. The Tibbetts trails and, as pictured, No Name trail looped us back to the Big Tree Ridge trail and the parking lot.  5.2 miles, 1285' gain,  in 2hr 15 minutes.  Nice going, well done!  Good conditioning  workout.
