Crescent Bay

  • Wed, May 4, 2016
  • Crescent Bay
  • Sea Kayaking

We started the day a little scattered as some participants launched from the Salt Creek County Park (free), and others launched from the Crescent Bay Beach & RV ($8). Our group of 8 found ourselves punching out through bigger breaking waves than we had anticipated. There were relatively calm periods if you had the patience to wait for them but several people found themselves “maytaged”. We all made it out with no real damage, (other than pride). We paddled around the headland West of Crescent Bay, and to the far end of Agate Bay. Wow, the cliff’s in this area are taller, more vertical and more spectacular than I remembered. We paddled West to the Lyre River outfall, and landed on the East shore of the river for lunch. The North Olympic Land Trust has recently purchased/protected 280 acres in this area, and it is currently open to the public. The paddle back was a slog against a 10 (+/-) knot breeze from the East. We got a break from the wind in the agate beach cove and stopped to snack and hydrate. In Crescent Bay the surf was perfect and most of us took the time to take a few rides before loading gear and heading home.
