Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Mount Ruth & Steamboat Prow

Great views, good route conditions

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • - Intermittent snow on trail less than a mile before Glacier Basin

    - There are wide snow bridges over the river, but they looked a little thin and required some careful probing

    - Inter Glacier is in good shape, no crevasses showing. There are good views of the glacier from Ruth to check conditions before descending that way. UPDATE: A skier on Facebook reported seeing some cracks opening, these appear to be far skier's left.

Perfect weather and a great group. We headed up south from Glacier Basin up gain the ENE ridge of Ruth, then followed the ridge from there to Steamboat Prow. A very long and slow glissade of most the Inter brought us back to Glacier Basin. Good snow conditions  made the trip quick.

5400' gain, 11.5 miles, 8.5 hours round trip. We took a few leisurely breaks, GPS recorded moving at at 6.5 hours.

Brought crampons, didn't use them.
