Mount Ruth (Mount Rainier)

A strenuous but not very technical scramble to an over 8,500 ft peak, with 4,500 ft of elevation gain and snow late into the season. This peak has in-your-face views of glaciers, Little Tahoma and Mt Rainier, and often extensive glissading opportunities.

getting there

Drive SR-410 in Mount Rainier National Park to Sunrise Road. It's 5 miles from the northern entrance and 4 miles from Cayuse Pass to the south. Turn onto Sunrise Road and drive 5 miles, turn left onto the White River Campground Road, and continue 1.2 miles to the campground (4,300 ft).

Approach & ASCENT

From the White River Campground follow Glacier Basin Trail 4 mi to meadow. Turn south on one of several spur boot trails opening in brush (avoid first left trail as it is not a good place to cross stream) down short dirt embankment to river. Cross wherever feasible. Head to moraine/high ridge. Steep snow up to ridge. Follow ridge up through rock outcroppings, then traverse right and up to right skyline. Veer left up to summit.

A more adventurous route-finding alternative follows the long east-northeast ridge that parallels the north edge of the Emmons Glacier, passing Point 6723 and Point 6735 and culminating in Mount Ruth.

For a nice addition and views of Camp Schurman, continue up the ridge gaining another 1,000 feet to Steamboat Prow. This adds an extra 2 miles round trip, and increases the technical level to Technical 4. Steamboat Prow is also on the Mount Rainier National Park 100 Peak list.
