Alpine Scramble - Humpback Mountain

A pleasant evening scramble on a very hot bluebird late spring day. Great views, great group!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Can drive to upper Trailhead.  Snow start in patches around 4000 feet.  Late spring conditions with non-continuous snow from 4000 ft. Some post-holing around trees and rocks. Steep snow in the final pitch. Some traction (crampons or spikes) advised.

After many last minute cancellations and going through many people in the waitlist who were actually no longer available, we had a great small group of 4 participants and 3 leaders. Small but great team!

We met at exit 47 T intersection and caravanned to the upper trailhead. The road section and first 1000 feet of gain were snow-free. We begun to find patches of snow around 4000 feet.

Late spring conditions with some post-holing around trees and rocks made for a slower ascent. We decided to out on some traction 0some had crampons, some spikes toward the top section of the scramble when it got steeper and pulled our ice axe and don helmets. Steep snow in the final pitch but we kicked good steps that a later (non-Mountaineers group) was able to use for a quick ascent. They appreciated us! Some traction (crampons or spikes), ice ax and helmets are strongly advised in the upper part.

Great weather and views from the summit on a very hot evening in the lowlands.
