Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Foss Peak

Beautiful weather and good snow conditions. 7.5 miles, 2,800 elevation gain, 6 hrs 40 minutes (with a long summit break)

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

We met at the Narada Falls parking lot at 8am (mostly empty when we arrived, packed when we returned in the afternoon).

We walked the road to Reflection Lake and then turned off onto the snow, roughly following the Pinnacle Peak trail through the trees. There was some postholing in tree wells, but okay conditions overall.

Participants took turns navigating and breaking trail. We stopped to get out ice axes and put on helmets when the trail started to steepen.

The snow above the tree line was well consolidated and soft enough to move easily.  We were fine without traction or snowshoes the entire day.

There was a cornice near the final push to the summit that was easily avoided by staying to the right.

We reached the summit in about 3 hours.  The summit rocks were melted out just enough for our group of 7 to sit. We had a long, leisurely lunch before making our way back down.

There was one short section where we opted to face-in down climb. Then we were able to take a series of glissades down the peak (highlight of the day for most participants).

IMG_0239.jpegIt was straightforward getting back to the parking lot - a couple bonus glissades, plunge steps, some forest postholing, the road walk and the gross, hard snow next to the falls.
