Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Echo Rock & Observation Rock

Beautiful forecast for mostly sunny, started getting sunny around 11am, then all whiteout.

  • Road rough but passable
  • Snowline was about 7000'. Snow was mostly soft; no crampons needed, but a couple spots near Observation Rock summit was rather icy; close to needing crampons.

Weather forecast was for mostly sunny. On arrival at trailhead, was all cloudy, but could start to see sun peeking through the clouds. Looked like it was going to be a sensational day, as sky was mostly blue and the top of Rainier could be seen. Wildflowers were delightful in Spray Park, but probably not quite at peak yet. Had lovely sighting of a deer in upper Spray Park.  But as we approached the Flett Glacier, the fog that had originally been in the basin and lifted, started to sink in again, and we never had views the rest of the day beyond that.  Still, a great workout, and interesting challenge on the loose rubble of Echo Rock; group was very attentive & safe.
