Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Del Campo Peak

Fun scramble. Not as spicy or exposed as expected.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

Cars were already parking on the road when we arrived to the trailhead at 7am.  I knew it was going to be a busy day in a popular area. I usually prefer remote, quiet scrambles, but I still had a lot of fun hiking through Gothic Basin and scrambling Del Campo.

Navigation was straightforward all the way to the scree field below the summit block. There was an obvious path and/or flagging to and around Foggy Lake. This trip report was helpful for route finding on the summit block.

I had expected the summit block to feel scary and exposed, but the group found the scrambling to be straightforward with big, solid handholds and footholds. The scree field leading to the notch was a bit loose - staying climbers left was more solid.

There were two parties descending while we went up, and four people coming up behind us.  There was plenty of room on the summit to enjoy the views.

Foggy Lake had a party vibe when we passed by on our descent.

Total time: 9.5 hours car-to-car.
