Cathedral Rock-Deception Pass-Tuck & Robin Lakes

Trip

Open Backpack - Cathedral Rock-Deception Pass-Tuck & Robin Lakes

This trip will involve overnights at two different lakes (Robin and Deep), and significant elevation gain on the first two days.

  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 25.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 8,357 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,280 ft
  • Pace: 2.0-2.2 mph average

Day one:
Trailhead to Robin Lakes (6.4 miles/3400').  We will follow the Deception Pass Trail (#1376) north to the turnoff for Trail #1376-1 to Tuck and Robin Lakes.  The last 3 miles is steep (3000' in ~3 miles) with areas of roots and loose dirt, and other areas of bare granite.  It is also at high elevation, so we will take our time.  The final stretch between Tuck and Robin Lakes is marked by cairns and will require careful navigation.   We will aim to stay in the area between the Upper and Lower Robin Lakes, but may need to spread out if there is not enough space for us to all tent near one another.  There does not appear to be a privy at Robin Lake (if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know).  Because the lake is surrounded primarily by granite, digging cat holes may not be an option, so come prepared with a WagBag or blue bag for hauling out waste.

Day two:
Robin Lake to Deep Lake (11.1 miles/3400').   We will hike back down to intersection with Deception Pass Trail, turn right and ascend to Deception Pass, then head south on the PCT through Cathedral Pass.  Shortly after the junction with the Cathedral Pass Trail (#1345), the trail to Deep Lake (#1375) heads off to the right.  A privy is available, and there are plenty of camping spots as a lot of PCT hikers overnight there.

Day three:
Deep Lake to trailhead (7.5 miles/1557' ascent).  We will backtrack a bit, hiking back to PCT and towards Cathedral Pass, then turn right (S) on the Cathedral Pass Trail.  After crossing the bridge at the Cle Elum River, we will end up at the Cathedral Pass Trailhead and will need to walk a short ways on the road to reach our cars.

We will meet at the Tucquala Meadow Trailhead (NOT Cathedral Pass Trailhead) at 9AM, ready to go, and start hiking at 9:15.  The trailhead is located at the end of Cle Elum Valley Road/NF-4330 (coordinates 47.54493, -121.09803).  It is approximately a 3 hour drive from the Seattle area.
