- This trip is for you if you can sustain the pace described below and your Mountaineers activity profile shows that you have done so in the past 2-3 months.
- No expertise in fungi identification is required to join this trip.
- First ~1.5 miles are on a gravel road through a recreational home subdivision. Here our pace will be brisk (2 - 2.5 mph).
- Once the actual forest trail begins, it's another ~1 mi to enter the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and the best habitat for fungi on our route. We may pause to observe fungi in this 1 mile stretch, but will reserve most of our time to be in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. In this stretch, our pace may be 1.5-2.0 mph.
- Once we are in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the pace will depend on what we find.
- Our turnaround location will be the place that will get us back to the trailhead by at least 3:30-ish. We will go as far toward Alaska Lake as time & fascinating fungi allow.
- 8:30am, ready to hike. Meet at parking lot of Gold Creek Pond trailhead (NF-9080, Snoqualmie Pass). From North Bend take I-90 east Hyak exit #54. Turn left (north) at the bottom of the exit & turn right on Forest Service Road #4832 that parallels the north side of the freeway. Drive 1.0 mile, turn left on Gold Creek road #142 & turn left in 0.3 mile into the Gold Creek Pond parking lot.
