It's time to integrate all of that theory from the Intro to the Natural World class and explore a different ecoregion. The plan is to hike the Discovery Trail, with an emphasis on trees and succession, and enjoy the spring wildflowers of the Teanaway, together with their pollinators. We might be a little early for some of this region's specialty flowers but can see how spring is progressing. We will look at flowers, trees, shrubs, birds, and other things. The birds should be singing. Bring lunch and water for a midday break.

We will examine how abiotic and biotic factors influence plant communities and the fauna. We will look at fire regimes, how organisms adapt to fire as well as other disturbances. We will find examples of pollination, seed dispersal, predation, and parasitism.
The co-leaders will send out information to all participants so they can coordinate carpools but will be staying in the Leavenworth area the night before. Anyone interested in camping Friday evening prior to the trip should contact the Assistant Leader Dory Foster.
Meet in-town to carpool, or at the Swauk Forest Discovery Trail Parking Lot just off Blewett Pass at 9:00 am. The trailhead is about 0.25 miles up FS Road 9716. Drive time from Seattle is about 2 hours. NW Forest Pass required. Restrooms are available at the trailhead.
Here is a google link to the trailhead.
