Early spring stroll through Coal Creek Natural area to Newcastle beach and back. Naturalist emphasis on identifying common trees, plants and ferns of the PNW while maintaining an average 2mph pace.

From the parking lot at the YMCA, we will follow the Lower Coal Creek trail northwest through the Coal Creek Natural area to Newcastle Beach Park (3.7 mi) where we will have lunch before hiking back.

We will go at a moderate pace (2 mph) with rest breaks as needed. Along the way we will focus on identifying the common trees and ferns of the PNW and discuss some of the Native uses of these plants. Here is the plant list for this area: Cougar Mountain, WA, US · iNaturalist
Please bring the 10 essentials, dress in layers and plenty of water. Trail is likely to be muddy in places, so please wear appropriate footwear.
For safety we will all hike as a group so please assess beforehand whether this distance/elevation gain/pace will suit you before registering

Expectations:
Pace: Everyone is expected to be able to maintain a 1.75-2 mph pace, with allowances for steeper sections or difficult terrain.
Meet at the Coal Creek Family YMCA parking lot (https://maps.app.goo.gl/8ckT6GfucMWeEZWz7) at 9am
No parking pass is needed to park there. There are no restrooms in the parking lot, so you may need to stop on the way.
