Day Hike - Teneriffe (Kamikaze) Falls

Join me and my dog Ajax for a birding-focused hike to a beautiful waterfall. This will be at a social, leisurely pace to appreciate birdsong and beauty with several sensory breaks of silence and an extended break at the Falls for photos and a snack. Perfect for introverts or those wanting to soak up Mother Nature's beauty.

  • Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 6.3 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,778 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 2,500 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2 mph

This trip will focus on safety, fun, and sensory enjoyment. Bring binoculars and the Merlin bird app if you like. Our pace will include a few sensory breaks of 3-5 minutes to listen for birds, take photos, and enjoy the solitude and stillness, hence the smaller size for this group.

We'll still get our heart rates up on the moderate grade to the Falls over switchbacks beyond the first mile, but the goal will be recreating ourselves and taking in the beauty of spring. The hike will happen rain or shine, although high winds (hence danger) will mean rescheduling since it will be nearly impossible to hear birds, not to mention dangerous for us.

You do NOT need to be a birding expert for this trip, but it would help if you want to learn more about them.

I will drive with my dog and meet everyone at the Mt. Si trailhead at 6:50 a.m. Recent reports have shared that the NPS has not been as consistent with timing of gate entry at the Teneriffe Falls/Teneriffe Parking Lot so we'll bypass any issues by walking up from Si and exploring the Roaring Creek Trail to our destination. Same final spot but a different route to reach it.

Be ready for stretches and introductions at 7 a.m., and we'll plan to start walking by 7:10. Please coordinate carpooling per Mountaineers guidelines.
