Cross-country Ski - Mount Catherine Loop (winter)

Not the traditional Mt Catherine ski loop involving ski lifts, but an up and back journey from the Hyak SnoPark, utilizing the "common corridor" approach.

7:45am at Issaquah Transit Center. Groomed SnoPark permits required for all drivers.  Passengers to reimburse drivers for both gas and permits please.

Unlike the more usual Mt Catherine ski loop, we will utilize the Common Corridor approach from the Hyak SnoPark.  This means no expensive day pass or chair lift ride needed; instead we need a SnoPark permit. We start from Hyak by heading down the Iron Horse trail a shy mile, then locate the blue diamond marked cut through.  This next short section will be the most challenging, including ungroomed snow and require herringbone and side step techniques.  But then we will find the groomed Snoqualmie Summit nordic trails to take us up to Windy Pass, stopping at the cabin before the climb gets serious.  At the Pass, depending on group interest and snow conditions, we may explore more widely, before retracing our ski back down, first some nice groomed runs to practice snowplowing, then some flats, before again the reverse of the ungroomed section, followed by the very flat Iron Horse.  Overall, a good mix of ski skills needed.  No skater skiers, please, given the ungroomed section we are taking.
