Beginner Sea Kayak - Golden Gardens

Training Paddle for Seattle Sea Kayak Basic Course. The 8 mile paddle starts at Golden Gardens in Seattle over to Discovery Park and back.

Arrive at the Eddie Vine boat ramp at 8:15 to help with unloading kayaks from Kayak Academy. We will return by 2:00 and will take about 45 minutes to gather rental gear and load kayaks and have a meeting.

Our paddle will bring us close to the Ballard ( Hiram Chittenden) Locks. Lunch is at Discover Park. There is a restroom nearby. We will practice our paddle float and assisted rescues.

Bring a lunch and weather appropriate gear for either sun or rain.

To prepare for the paddle,see if you can find the relevant tides, currents and weather for the day.

Eddie Vine is saltwater boat ramp lying between Golden Gardens park and the Shilshole Marina.

There is plenty of parking near at Golden Gardens Park and there is also street parking. Some parking is reserved for people with boat trailers. Some parking is two hours only. Examine the parking signs.

There are restrooms at the park and the launch.

If you are renting a kayak and/or drysuit and related gear be sure to contact Kayak Academy.  The cost is $45 to $115 depending. Kayak Academy does deliver.

This paddle is initially reserved for beginning paddlers taking the Seattle Sea Kayaking Basic Class. If there are unfilled spots, other paddlers may participate.

These three essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  2. Paddle
  3. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
