The trail follows an old logging road switchbacking up to Kendall basin and eventually to a junction between the split offs to the Lakes and to the knob overlooking Gold Creek Basin and to the ski resort, if the weather is clear enough. We will stay on the road for an easier trip with lower avalanche danger. Around 3.5 miles up, the road makes a sharp turn and heads south. To reach Kendall Peak Lakes (4,400 ft) we'll leave the road, turn north and traverse below the crest of the ridge and traverse for about one more mile. We will return to the junction and take the short side trip to reach first Kendall Knob (4,300 ft). We will then continue back down the main road/trail back to the Sno-park.
The total round trip is expected to be 9 miles, and we will be traveling at a moderate pace. We will plan to eat lunch at the knob. While the route is pretty straightforward, please be sure you are in condition for a trip of this length on snowshoes.
Please note that rain or a high risk avalanche forecast will cancel the trip, or alternately change the location.
Gold Creek Sno-Park, located about 1 mile north of the freeway. Take Exit 54 off of I-90, turn left, and cross under the interstate. Plan to arrive by 8:15am, and be geared up and ready to go by 8:30am.
A Sno-Park permit (non-groomed) is required at the parking area for each vehicle. Day pass $25 / Annual pass $50.
