Backpack - Northern Loop (Mount Rainier)

Non-traditional, off-trail version of the classic Mt. Rainier loop. We will camp near Grand Park, Tyee Peak, Vernal Park and the Carbon Glacier. We will visit the areas in and around Crescent Mountain, Elysian Fields, Old Desolate and Mineral Mountain. We will not be dropping down to the Carbon River area. This is a challenging trip to an amazing area.  We will be traveling and camping off-trail for a significant amount.  This will include travel up and down boulder fields and ridge lines, rough boot paths and no paths.  Nothing too ticky or dangerous, but definitely challenging.  Each day has significant elevation gain.  We will need to find suitable camps in our assigned/reversed areas.  We will need to haul water a mile or less to some of the camps.  Our route will skip the Carbon River (lower elevation) portion of the Northern Loop and instead proceed off-trail and/or via boot-path south from Windy Gap through the group of mountains in the middle of the traditional loop (Crescent/Old Desolate, etc.).  At the north we will 'pop-out' at Moraine Park and proceed up the east lateral moraine of the Carbon Glacier for our camp on night four.  Ursack or Bear Canister is required.

This is a Leader's Permission Only Trip.  Please answer/response to the all the questions below:

1)  This is a five day trip with about 14,000' of gain, about 3,500' each day.  What backpacking trips have you done in the past year that tell me you can do this sort of trip successfully?

2)  This trip has extensive amounts of off-trail travel and boot-paths and boulder fields and other terrain challenges.  What is your experience with this form of travel?  Are you comfortable with this?

3)  This trip has unknown (we will need to find) camps and a need to carry water to several of these camps.  Are you okay with this?  Will you bring bladder/water capacity of about 4 liters (for dinner, night and breakfast at camp).

4)  Have you backpacked with this leader before?  When and where?  If not, please provide a Mountaineers Backpack Leader I can check in with about your suitableness for this type of trip.

5)  There is a $52 fee for this trip.

I will be away on several backpacking trips before this one and will have intermittent email connection.  I will respond to permissions requests when I am back and connected.  Thanks.  Rob

Meet at White River Ranger Station early to mid-morning  to get permit.
