We will caravan from Wapiti Outdoors to the trailhead, reached by heading south on SR 410, turning right at FR 73, continuing for about ten miles to the trailhead parking area on the right side of the road. A Northwest Forest Pass or National Park pass may be required to be displayed by cars parked by the trailhead.
The backpack in to Lake Eleanor is less than a mile, with about 200 feet elevation gain. There could be muddy places and stream crossings on the trail, so waterproof footwear should be worn.
After we set up camp, we will do an optional day hike of about 7 miles RT with 400 feet gain through Grand Park to a viewpoint over the canyon of the West Fork of the White River, our lunch spot and turnaround point. For those doing the day hike, the total gain will be 600 feet over 9 miles RT.
After returning to camp from the day hike, we will have a camp dinner together, followed by smores around the campfire, if fire regulations permit.
Sunday morning, we will have a camp breakfast, and then pack up camp and hike out. On the drive home, there will be the option for a group refreshment stop in either Greenwater or Enumclaw, depending on the covid 19 situation at the time.
This is a good backpack trip for beginning backpackers who are experienced day hikers.
Meet at 8 AM Saturday in the parking lot of Wapiti Outdoors, 5814 SR 410 E, Greenwater, WA. 98022. A portapotty is available in the parking lot. Breakfast food can be purchased at the Wapiti Outdoors snack bar, accessed via the back deck.
