Backpack - Elwha River from Whiskey Bend

Bike and Hike Trip. Bike 6.5 miles from Elwha river washout to TH. Backpack from TH--two nights at river campsite with a day to explore further up river. Wildlife and solitude. Friday to Sunday

  • Easy
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 27.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 1,500 ft
  • Pace: 2-2.5 MPH

Early Friday morning, likely in North Seattle.  Will coordinate time with the Edmonds Ferry either 7:10 or 7:45 sailings.  Can also meet at WIC in Port Angeles

The Elwha road is washed out near the 101 entrance.  There is now a 6.5 road/trail route to the Whiskey Bend TH.  Most is paved and unpaved roadbed with approxiately 1.25 miles of rough trail through the wash-out.  According to the ONP Ranger, one may need to walk their bike through this rough section.  Riding a bike with a full backpack is certainly doable but not easy.  Partipants need to have experience with this or be out praticing before the trip so they know they can do this activity.  Preliminary plan is to camp two nights at Mary's Falls camp (8.2 miles from TH) and day hike up to around Remanns Cabin camp on Saturday (8.2 miles RT).  On our return on Sunday we will detour through Geyser Valley/Humes Ranch to check it out. We will have fires if allowed.  The valley is noted for wildlife: Elk, Bears, Otters, Etc.  There is a $8 per person per night ONP backcountry fee. This trip is weather dependent.  A few showers--okay.  Steady rain all day--no thanks.  Another drier trip may be substituted.  Leader's permission required.  Please tell me about your willingness, ability and/or experience with biking with a pack.  I have one extra, wide tread bike someone may borrow.  Several drivers and larger vehicles may be required to transport the bikes, packs and people.
