Alpine Scramble - Tirzah & Wallace Peaks Loop

Tirzah and Wallace Peak Loop, two Rainier 100 peaks north of Carbon River. Read Leader's Notes!

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 17.1 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,662 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,760 ft

Carbon River Entrance 6:00 AM

Rare opportunity for those seeking Rainier 100 badge. Perhaps more enjoyable than Third Mother Mountain or Pitcher Peak. Expect a long, strenuous day with steep terrain, many blowdowns and navigating around cliff bands. Route finding between Wallace and Tirzah could be quite challenging. Please do your research and don't request permission unless serious. When requesting, tell me about your recent conditioning activity and off-trail experience. Based on previous trips, I anticipate a minimum 12 hour day to complete this counter-clockwise loop:

  1. Ride bikes 3.6 miles to Chenuis Falls Crossing and stow bikes. Ensure crossing is in place before proceeding.
  2. Hike 1.3 miles on Carbon River Road to Ipsut Creek.
  3. Hike 4.1 miles on Wonderland Trail and Northern Loop. We will attempt the Lower Carbon River Crossing. If we are unsuccessful, then the trip changes to summit Gove Peak instead.
  4. Scramble off-trail 3.7 miles to summit Wallace Peak, then Tirzah Peak.
  5. Regain trail at Chenuis Falls and cross Carbon River 0.8 miles.
  6. Ride bikes back to Carbon Entrance, 3.5 miles.

Total non-biking distance: 9.9 miles

Although the park service has not officially bridged the Lower Crossing yet, there are groups who have already successfully navigated across. Hopefully by the time the trip starts, conditions will be even better.
