Trip Report

Basic Snowshoe - Mazama Ridge

Amazing views, sun and snow, and fun team make for a memorable trip.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

After corralling cars down below, we ended up being cars #4&5 as we drove through the Longmire gate a couple minutes before 9am.  It was going to be a busy day at Paradise, that was clear.  We parked near the trailhead for the Mazama Ridge approach, already in full sun but appreciating the breeze that always swings around that corner.  The NPS has begun grading of the snow on the road down to the Fourth Crossing TH so our travel was easy.  Heading up from Fourth Crossing to the Ridge, we generally followed previous snowshoe tracks, already finding the snow punchy in places.  Once breaking through the final tree band to reach the Ridge, we all basked in wide open views between Rainier and the Tatoosh Range.

After pausing for a snack, we then headed further up the Ridge, eventually making our way to the provisional point 6252 where a more lengthy lunch ensued.  After lunch, we ventured a bit closer to the Paradise River and Falls before returning to close our loop.

Before heading off the Ridge, we took a bit time to explore the ridge to points looking east.  Then, the descent was overall easy, although we did encounter a SAR team heading out to assist a skier with a lower leg injury.  Things were still hopping at Paradise on our return.  We ended up finding some early supper at Rainier Basecamp, and enjoyed some pleasant outdoor dining, before completing the long drive home.
