This course previously relied on "Outdoor Leadership" by John Graham as a text.  This is a very good text, but received criticism from participants who felt the messaging was dated and not inclusive, and so we've searched for other texts to guide the course.

The "AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership" by Alex Kosseff was reviewed, but also has some holes, and was last published in 2013.

Another book, "Leadership Educator Notebook" by NOLS, has been recommended but not yet reviewed, though I have reviewed the NOLS' "Wilderness Guide."  Chapters 1, 2, 7, 9 and 10 of the Wilderness Guide are very applicable to this course and are helpful.

None of these texts are perfect, so we will not require anyone to purchase and read a text for this course, though we do strongly believe that you will get more value from this course by reading one of the above texts prior to our first lecture.

Additionally, please consider some Diversity, Equity, Inclusion self-study prior to these course, to better frame all of our conversations about leadership.  One whitepaper, provided by a 2020 Participant, is attached to the Course Materials.
