Open Coastal Kayaking Clinic - Hobuck Beach

Long boat (sea kayak) surfing clinic. Learn how to ride waves in your sea kayak

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 3.0 nm

Hobuck campground, Neah bay,  Ready to launch at 9 AM

Everyone that signs up for this paddle or clinic needs to ALSO sign up for the June 10 - 14 Sea Kayak -- Hobuck (ie, Surf Zone and Beyond) activity so we have a head count of everyone who's coming (even if you are just coming for part of it) and everyone must bring their ID and proof of vaccination to be admitted to the Makah Reservation.

Learn to ride waves in your sea kayak (long boats).  In this clinic we will discuss

  • Wave selection for fun, not punishment
  • Safe traffic - how to avoid konking people on the head or breaking equipment
  • Surf ettiequte - how to play nice with everyone else out there for fun
  • Catching waves
  • Boat control on waves
  • Paddling out with out getting too beat up

This class is for people with some experience in surf and a wish to learn and improve their enjoyment riding waves with out becoming a hazard to everyone inshore of them.  Michael's class on 'how-to-not-surf' is a very good foundation (and good skill to have).

Participants should be able to:

  • Stay upright in dynamic water using brace strokes
  • Paddle out and in through surf with out getting surfed
  • Swim their boat in through surf
  • A roll is helpful but not necessary

The structure of the class will respond to conditions.  Expect something like

  • Shore discussion of waves, safety, technique, and ettiequte
  • Mixture of riding waves with coating and some shore discussion
  • Lunch
  • Less structured afternoon.  We may paddle to other beach locations to catch other waves.
  • About 20% instruction and 80% individual practice.

If conditions are not suitable for this class, we will plan something else that is.  It all depends...

Here's a short video of a ride I had on a sunny afternoon, February of 2019.  The wave is small but beautifully formed.
