Stewardship - Glacial Heritage Preserve

Awesome day caring for and exploring this beautiful prairie!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

Mostly sun and cool temps made perfect spring weather for this stewardship outing. We spent most of the morning pulling invasive Scotch Broom. Then after a leisurely lunch, representatives of the Center for Natural Land Management (CNLM) treated us to a private tour of this fragile preserve. We were introduced to many wildflower species currently in bloom, and also learned a lot about various birds as well as the many "Mima Mounds."

The Glacial Heritage Preserve is open to the public 1 day a year, so May 14th is your next opportunity to visit. Here's a link to more information: http://www.prairieappreciationday.org/

A really special treat was finding many Golden Paintbrush. This species has been federally listed as threatened, but is making a comeback and might be delisted thanks to prairie restoration efforts in Washington. I didn't get any photos of it yesterday, but here's a link to information: https://fws.gov/story/2021-06/golden-paintbrush-recovery-story
