Sea Kayak - Burrows & Allan Islands

New year's day paddle around Burrows and Allen islands on a mild winter day.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

A group of 8 kayakers launched from Washington Park at 9:30 on the first day of 2024 with the intent to carve a figure 8 around Burrows and Allen islands.  As I anticipated, conditions were mild.  High clouds, beautiful winter light, clear air, views of the Olympics, and comfortable air temperatures.

We made three stops.  First, the Burrows lighthouse.  They have done significant work, including, I heard, lead abatement.  The grating was removed from the helicopter landing pad, the house had a new roof, the light house was no longer fenced, and the lawn had been re-seeded.

Next, a brief touch on a remote beach of Alan to stretch.

Then Young Island.  Here, there has also been work.  The old cabin, outhouse, and bunk house are gone.  We walked to the south and had second lunch on the grassy knoll.

Back at Washington park about 3:00.  Everyone agreed this was the best paddle of the year.  The relaxed pace and longer breaks were appreciated.
