Mountain Workshops

Mountain Workshops are designed in collaboration with group leaders to meet the educational goals of the group.  Whether 1 hour or ½ hour activity blocks, or a day hike in the mountains, the curriculum and program are designed to match the goals of the visiting group and impart on the youth participants a desire to explore and conserve the outdoors.

A flexible, hands-on curriculum teaches safety and appreciation for the environment. Participants learn skills applicable to almost anything youth will do for the rest of their lives: communication, planning, overcoming obstacles, gaining confidence, and team-work.

Sample of Activities we offer

  • Rock Climbing (indoors or outdoors, weather-dependent)
  • Rappelling (ages 10+; must be combined with Rock Climbing)
  • Belaying (ages 13+; must be combined with Rock Climbing)
  • Hiking
  • Snowshoeing
  • Outdoor Cooking
  • Navigation
  • First Aid
  • Leave No Trace & 10 Essentials
  • Cross Country Skiing

For climbing activities at the program center, we can teach twelve students per hour through climbing; if your group has more students, plan for another activity run simultaneously taught by your organization or The Mountaineers. We have partnered with the YMCA, John Muir Elementary School, Bailey Gatzert Elementary School, SPARK This, Hope Place Family shelter, and Brettler Family Place among others.

Summer Hours:

From late-June through August we run summer camps at the Program Center which impacts our ability to offer daytime climbing workshops. Summer is a great time for an off-site Mountain Workshop hiking or exploring our public lands! At the Seattle Program Center, we can offer most activities after 5pm and have limited access to the outdoor climbing wall from 12pm-5pm Tuesdays thru Thursdays.
