Dockside training session for students of Tacoma's Basic Crewing/Sailing Course.

Meet on the dock by the sailboats at 1 pm. Park in the pay parking lot or on the street.

This is the Dock side training session included in the Tacoma Branch's Basic Crewing/Sailing Course.  Students of the course should only sign up for one Dockside Training activity.

An outline of topics that will be covered during this training sail is under the "Required Equipment" tab below.  Please review the related material in your course text book before the sail and make sure you ask any questions necessary for you to understand the concept being covered.

Sail activities will take place rain or shine.   Please show up on time.

At The Dock

  • Demonstrate safe proper boarding "permission to board”.
  • Safety and boat review.  Show location of safety items including PFDs, Life Sling, etc.  Walk through boat, cover safety rules, don PFDs.
  • Quick review of parts of the boat: bow, stern, hull, deck, cockpit, keel, rudder, tiller(helm), mast, boom, lifelines, stanchions, bow pulpit, stern pulpit, masthead fly, port, starboard.
  • Standing Rigging (keeps mast standing); forestay, backstay, shrouds, spreaders.
  • Running Rigging (moves); halyard, sheet, cunningham, boom vang, furling line.
  • Walk through rigging the boat and preparing to hoist the sails.
  • Demonstrate how to make a line to a cleat.
  • Demonstrate how to load, grind, and cast off a line from a winch.
  • Demonstrate how to tie bowline, round turn and 2 half hitches, clove hitch and figure 8 knots.
  • Demonstrate use of tiller/wheel.
  • Identify and discuss function for each line used mooring the boat.
  • Undocking; stress difference in "prepare" and "do" cast off.
  • Outline Process for stowing fenders and dock lines and other things required to make boat ready to sail.
