New Hike/Backpack Leader Seminar - Mountaineers Tacoma Program Center

Learn about becoming a Hike and/or Backpack Leader for The Mountaineers!

This in person seminar will meet at Tacoma Program Center in the classroom upstairs at 6:30 pm. Doors will open at 6:15 pm for those interested in lending a hand and opportunity to socialize.

We are excited to have you and look forward to sharing the rewards of volunteering by becoming a hike and/or backpack leader.

Join the Tacoma Hiking and Backpacking Committee as we cover what it takes to become a Mountaineers hike and/or backpack leader. Included are some real life scenarios, which is also the highlight of the evening and a great opportunity to get to know one another and discover your style of leadership.

Goals and Objectives for the seminar

~Participants will learn about the requirements for certification.

~Participants will gain interpersonal skills by making sound group decisions and avoiding potential conflict through participation in scenarios presented in small groups. 

~Participants will learn how to list trips, planning and pacing of trips, and how to mitigate and avoid common hazards

An open mind ready to learn!

We will follow the Mountaineers current code of conduct for face coverings which as of September 7, 2022 face coverings are a recommendation for indoor meetings. Our classroom will have adequate ventilation with windows open for the evening so please bring a jacket for your comfort because it can get cold. We will have large tables with 2 participants to a table for adequate social distancing and have hand sanitizer readily available for use.

You are also encouraged to bring a snack, water bottle and anything you may need for your personal comfort including a pen for notes. Handouts will be printed and available.
