The Tacoma Hiking & Backpacking Committee welcomes novice and experienced hikers and backpackers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities who want to enjoy a sense of community and shared adventure.

Our hikes are led year round by skilled and experienced Mountaineers whose goals are the safety and enjoyment of the whole team.  Hikes of all difficulties are are available and we require the 10 essentials on all day hikes. 

In 2021, we introduced two new courses in Tacoma. Our next Conditioning Hiking Series course will begin in March 2022 and Geology Rocks! will start in the fall of 2022.

Welcome to Hiking

Get yourself out and on the trails during the offseason by joining the Tacoma Hiking & Backpacking Committee on a series of easy to moderate fall and winter hikes that are focused on beginners. Learn tips, tricks, and strategies from our experienced hike leaders that will help increase your confidence to get outside and enjoy yourself. Hikes will range from 4 to 6 miles in length and will be led at a slower pace that is perfect for beginning hikers. These trips will run from the end of November 2021 through March 2022. Enjoy overnight backpacking trips with a group of like-minded travelers.  We offer single and multi-night trips as well as an Introduction to Backpacking Course beginning each March.

Trail Emergency Preparedness

We offer an evening Trail Emergency Preparedness Seminar for those interested in brushing up on basic first aid. 

For more experienced participants, the Tacoma Branch offers challenging opportunities to develop skills in Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Navigation, and Outdoor Leadership
