New Hike/Backpack Leader Seminar - Mountaineers Tacoma Program Center

Join us to learn about becoming a hike and/or backpack leader for The Mountaineers. All are welcome to attend.

We will meet in the upstairs classroom at the Tacoma Program Center. The seminar will begin at 6:30pm.  Set up will at 6pm for those interested in lending a hand. 

Please bring proof of COVID-19 vaccine card or picture of the proof, face covering (mask required)

Come join the Tacoma Hiking and Backpacking Committee as we go over what it takes to become a Mountaineers hike and/or backpack leader. We will also go over some real life scenarios, which is also the highlight of the evening.

Goals and Objectives for the seminar

~Participants will learn about the requirements for certification.

~Participants will gain interpersonal skills by making sound group decisions and avoiding potential conflict through participation in scenarios presented in small groups. 

~Participants will learn how to list trips, planning and pacing of trips, and how to mitigate and avoid common hazards.

***NOTE: Wilderness First Aid Requirement For those planning on becoming a hike leader, you may consider signing up after Feb 1, 2022 for Trail Emergency Preparedness being held May 5, 2022. This class fills very quickly and meets one of the outside course requirements (Navigation being the other) for becoming a hike leader.

An open mind ready to learn and your willing and positive attitude. A notebook and something to write with may also be a good idea.
