We are excited to announce that this year's Keynote Presenter will be Jeff Renner, local meteorologist and Mountaineers Books author! In his presentation "Not Quite Ready for a Darwin Award", Jeff will share stories of adventures and mis-adventures outdoors in the Northwest. He will discuss how these experiences have formed his focus on environmental issues, as well as the importance of introducing people to wilderness.

Jeff Renner

For decades, Jeff served as Chief Meteorologist for KING Television, retiring in 2016 after 38 years. He holds degrees in Atmospheric Science from the University of Washington, and in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin. He has been awarded nine Emmys for both his on-air work as a meteorologist and his work as a producer/writer/host for several science documentaries.

Learning to climb was literally a part of Jeff's job description, enabling him to document the volcanic activity of Mount Baker in 1978, and two years later, to serve as the main correspondent for the Mount St. Helens eruption. Hiking, backpacking, skiing, scuba diving, and sailing remain among Jeff's major interests. Jeff also holds a commercial pilot's license for single and multi-engine land and sea planes, and he worked as a flight instructor for both Wings Aloft and Galvin Flying Service at Boeing Field.

Jeff continues to work as a forensic meteorologist in legal cases, and he focuses his volunteer efforts on environmental issues, which includes bi-weekly service as a volunteer diver for the Seattle Aquarium. Jeff has also has a firm connection to The Mountaineers. With support from Mountaineers Books, he has authored four books and two field guides, and he has contributed to two others, including the Mountain Weather chapter of Freedom of the Hills.
