Sea Kayak Navigation (on land)

Lecture: Sea Kayak Navigation

Sea Kayak Navigation (on land) - University of Washington: Oceanography Building

Explore the scientific, geologic and bathymetry composition of Puget Sound - to improve your Sea Kayak Navigation skills. A UW Oceanography staff technician will show us the Puget Sound Model - leading discussion on currents, fresh/salt water dynamic flow and related. We'll descend to nearby Aqua Verde Cafe for liquids afterward.

  • Casual

Meet at 3:00 pm sharp Fri Dec 9th on the south/water side of the UW Oceanography Building.  Specifically here: uw.edu/maps/?oce

The building is kept locked. Our host will let us in and lead us to Room 121 where the Puget Sound Model is kept. The approximate street address is: 1842 San Juan Road, Seattle, WA (as the Oceanography Building does not have an actual street address).

The S-1 parking garage is the closest to the building - there is a fee. The
other option is to pay for 2 hour street parking. It's pretty hard to find spots on most days.

This is a unique opportunity to see the original and only working model of Puget Sound. (The one at the Science Center is broken.)

Through a better understanding and birdseye view of the hydrodynamics throughout the Sound, we can enjoy and plan better trips.

The model's manager (Kathy Newell) will host a talk about how Puget Sounds rivers and currents intersect. To get an idea of what you can learn, see these videos:

Afterward, approximately 4:30 pm, we'll stroll to nearby Aqua Verde for some liquids and optional food.

This is a casual "learn something and eat something" get-together that will hopefully bring people together and possibly enable brainstorming of new interesting trips in our water wonderland.
