This lecture starts with everyone having a chance to introduce themselves to one another in their mentor group.  Then we will provide an overview of the B3 course philosophy and core components;  We then review how to plan a trip based on the type of trip and expected conditions including how to develop a packing checklist;  and over the remainder of the session we'll cover the basics of clothing and footwear selection for backpacking, socks and foot care, hydration, water purification, and your cook system.  We will break into smaller discussion groups periodically during the session so that you can explore some topics in more depth and see demonstrations by your mentor(s).
