The exam will have a variety of formats and is open book. Material on this exam may cover:
- Equipment
- Avalanche avoidance and rescue
- Navigation
- WFA and wilderness emergency response
- Rock climbing or scrambling
- Snow climbing or scrambling
- Glacier travel (for climbers)
- Miscellaneous topics that have come up but do not fit into any of the above
