Summit Society - Planned Gifts

The Mountaineers Summit Society recognizes forward thinking donors who have made provisions for The Mountaineers in their estate plans.Your planned gift commitment today will ensure the strength of The Mountaineers tomorrow.

For over 112 years The Mountaineers organization, our members, and our publications have had a profound impact on the larger outdoor community. We have aided the growth of outdoor recreation far beyond the Pacific Northwest and many of today’s natural resources exist thanks to actions and activities of Mountaineers members like you.

Heading into the next century, The Mountaineers leaders are committed to building on this foundation and stewarding The Mountaineers legacy by providing generations of today and tomorrow with meaningful outdoor experiences that will ensure a future for conservation.

You can help secure the future of The Mountaineers by considering a legacy gift. You can choose from a variety of options that reflect your values and philanthropic goals, including naming The Mountaineers as a beneficiary of your will or arranging a trust.

Legacy contributions can be made in a variety of ways:

  • Bequest by will
  • Through an IRA or other retirement account
  • Through a Charitable Remainder or a Charitable Lead Trust
  • An insurance policy
  • Appreciated Real Estate or other appreciated assets

Regardless of the size of your gift or the type you choose, the greatest benefit of a planned gift to The Mountaineers is in knowing that you are supporting programs that teach skills for a lifetime of outdoor pursuits, foster a volunteer ethic in our community, and inspire conservation through outdoor recreation and publishing works.

The Summit Society

The Summit Society is a way to thank, recognize and honor those who have included a gift to The Mountaineers through a bequest or other estate gift.

The Mountaineers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Legal Name: The Mountaineers
Tax ID #: 27-3009280

Make a Bequest

A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to The Mountaineers as part of your estate plan.

Benefits of Your Bequest

  • Receive estate tax charitable deduction.
  • Lessen the burden of taxes on your family.
  • Leave a lasting legacy.

Your Bequest Options

A bequest may be made in several ways:

  • Gift of a percentage of your estate
  • Gift of a specific dollar amount or asset
  • Gift from the balance or residue of your estate

Bequest Language

Example bequest language – Please feel free to change the numbers or percentages as you desire.

Bequest of cash

“I bequeath the sum of $20,000 to The Mountaineers of Seattle, WA.”

Bequest of a percent of the estate

“I devise and bequeath 20% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located to The Mountaineers, Seattle, WA.”

Making a Bequest of Your Retirement Assets

A retirement asset, such as an IRA account, makes an excellent bequest to us. If the IRA were given to your family, much of the value may be lost through estate and income taxes. By designating The Mountaineers as the beneficiary of all or part of your IRA (using a beneficiary designation form provided by your custodian), the full value of the gift is transferred tax-free at your death and your estate receives an estate tax charitable deduction.

We hope you will consider becoming part of The Mountaineers Summit Society. If you have  already included The Mountaineers in your estate plans, please let us know by completing the Summit Society Intention Form so we can express our gratitude for your generosity.
