Trip Report

Winterish Scramble - Dixie Peak

A great workout and commute, with sunshine on the descent. A nice opportunity to gauge snow conditions on the cascade crest (further to the east) on this 5300’ gain, 13 mile outing. Lead photo by Jesse Bengtsson.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Zero snow to the base of the haystack.  The logging road trail to the saddle NW of Teneriffe had a number of compacted snow/ice sections, and although micro-spikes were used they could have been skipped.

A great day and venue to maintain our respective conditioning, especially so given the low snow conditions interfering with the need for snowshoes at this and other locations.

Along with a great crew, an additional treat was having Mark Scheffer along to catch up on our respective plans/adventures, both future and in the past (quite a few funny stories ;).

Snow conditions closer to the cascade crest were evident to the east in this photo of Summit Chief, Overcoat Peak, and Chimney Rock West (left to right), with the saddle just north of Green Mountain in the foreground.

… which the cliff based plant life appreciated (just a bit west of the stone steps).

A beautiful day in the mountains in spite of the unseasonal snowpack conditions.  Our total time on this 5300’ gain, 13 mile outing was 8.5 hours (car to car) with a number of substantial breaks.  Photos from this and other trips to this venue can be seen hereas well as here.
