Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Teanaway Ridge

True Winter scramble - Ice Axe, Helmet, Spikes. Trip to a fire lookout and a peak in the same trip!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Parked at the side of US 97 junction. Parking for 4 cars available.  Below is excerpt from trip email sent to participants

Meeting time: Saturday February 15th at the  Junction of Blue creek Forest road and US -97 here : https://maps.app.goo.gl/cd6kASZdQPFvpR9C7

What to expect in this trip :

This should be a moderate to strenuous climb - gaining 2800 feet over 5 miles (one way). Summit success is only possible if everyone takes turns breaking trail and helping with navigation.  It will be a good conditioning trip in winter, when most of the mountains are covered with unconsolidated snow or getting more snow/rain dumped on. We will also have great views if it is cloudy or partially sunny. The main goal for this trip is to go out and get a work out. In summer the approach is a trail, but in winter, there will be much more snow - making it scramble. So please come prepared to help with navigation.

We will park the cars at the junction at US97 and Blue creek. Walk 2.5 miles on the forest road to the Blue creek trail number 1364.2. The entire section should be in avalanche safe terrain.

After we hit the trail (which I suspect will be hard to find under the snow) - we will encounter a lot of fresh snow to break the trail and gain the ridge that goes to Teanaway ridge. This will be done along a spine which runs perpendicular to the final destination ridge itself.

On Saturday, I led a trip to Teanaway Ridge and Red top Mountain lookout. The route was new to me, but you never go wrong in the Blewett pass regionPXL_20250215_205130041.MP.jpg

I was down with the flu for multiple weeks and I hadn't done any cardio or physical exercise. So I decided what better way to condition, than to be in the mountains directly. Surprisingly the trip didn't get many takers, we did manage to get 3 others to share the adventure with.

We started at the junction of US 97 and Blue creek road at 8.15 AM. We walked the first 2.5 miles to the Blue creek trail (snowshoes came in after the first mile).

We made good time to the forest road and went to Teanaway ridge first (the newly added Wenatchee backcourt 100 list after declared taller than red top mountain lookout).

The route traverses through tree'd region and a 15' open slope before gaining the ridge - which when taken climbers right goes to Teanaway ridge and when followed to climbers left goes to Red top mountain lookout.

Dean and I took turns breaking trail as we made quick progress to avoid the rain in the forecast.

We could see a faint track from folks who might have been up earlier last week. It took us about 3.45 to the top of Teanaway ridge.

From Teanaway ridge, we traversed over to red top mountain lookout

Red top mountain lookout was a true winter scramble, where we shed our snowshoes, put on helmets and drew our ice axes out to navigate a narrow rocky gully that took us to the final ridge.

Lovely part which took us to a view of a corniced ridge and the sun hiding behind snow clouds
We carefully summited the lookout and sidehilled and traversed our way back to the car at about 3.30PM
