Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Silver King

Wonderful 4 peak Crystal Mountain traverse

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • No snow at the base of Crystal Mountain ski resort.  Snow conditions good throughout the scramble, though the inch or so of new snow on consolidated snow made side traverses a bit slippery.  Solid snow for each ascent.  The ridge traverse is in and out of snow.

Super group!  The ascent from the cars to Threeway Peak was reasonably quick. Great snow up to the saddle south of the Peak, then picked our way through rock and snow along the ridge to get to the summit.  Great weather until 11:00 when the fog and snow storms came in and stayed for the remainder of the trip. Departed Threeway Peak via the ascent route until just short of the saddle and then self-belayed down the slope until it was safe to traverse around Threeway and across the basin to attain the north ridge.  Pleasant ridge walk to Silver King, though views would have made it awesome.  Continued along the north ridge in and out of snow via path of least resistance to tag The Throne and Silver Queen.  Followed south ridge just below the crest (skiers right) from Silver Queen until safe to traverse back (skiers right) onto the ski runs.  From there, followed various ski runs past "Big Foot" (with photo op) and back to car.  Only rain came just prior to getting to the car.
