Winter Scramble - Red Mountain (Salmon La Sac)

A wintry ascent of Red Mountain.

  • We were able to drive the crucial spur road (FS road 49) from the Cle Elum River road to the trailhead for the the northeast ridge of Red.  The trail up from there was in OK shape till the stream crossing at 3,300'.  We elected to follow the trail on the map to the north of the stream, which quickly degenerated in to a brush bash on a primitive flag-marked boot path;  next time I'd cross the stream and try the trail on the other side.

Great character builder with hard frozen earth, brush bashing, loose snow on talus and wintry weather.
