Amabilis Mountain (Cabin Creek Sno-Park)

We started from Cabin Creek Sno-Park, arriving in the morning to a parking lot that was approximately half full. A Sno-Park permit is required, and enforcement is common at this location. The area was busy with families and children learning to cross-country ski, which is typical for this Sno-Park on weekends.

The approach follows groomed cross-country and skate ski trails. Because snow coverage was relatively thin, we made a point to stay to the far right side of the trail whenever possible to avoid damaging the groomed surface and to give skiers space to pass. This is an important consideration for anyone using Cabin Creek, especially during peak hours.

Snow coverage in the lower elevations was thin, with exposed ground and vegetation in places. Traction needs were minimal early on, and travel was straightforward. As we gained elevation, snow coverage gradually improved, allowing us to cut some of the switchbacks to gain elevation more efficiently where it was reasonable to do so. Even so, overall snow depth was significantly lower than in previous years, and care was taken to avoid damaging underlying vegetation.

Higher on the mountain, snow conditions were more consistent, and travel became easier. Route-finding was simple, and no significant hazards were encountered. The ascent was steady and uneventful, making it a good instructional outing for newer participants.

We reached the summit area and found a pleasant lunch spot, though summit views were somewhat limited. From openings nearby, we were able to see Mount Daniel, Hinman, Chief, Lemah, and several surrounding peaks. While not a panoramic summit day, the views were rewarding given the conditions.

The descent followed our ascent route and was uneventful. Snow conditions remained stable, and travel downhill was efficient. We were mindful again of groomed trail etiquette once we rejoined the cross-country ski tracks.

Total round-trip time was approximately 6.5 hours, including breaks and lunch. Overall, it was a wonderful winter day in the mountains and a solid choice for a nearby snow outing when coverage is limited, provided users are respectful of the shared Sno-Park terrain.
