  • Whitman Crest/Fryingpan Glacier
  • Climbing

We did this as a one day climb starting at 5am at the trailhead. The trail was in great shape and clear to summerland. The scramble up to meany crest was snow free and a bit of a pain due to scree and loose rocks. The Frying pan Gl had 3-6" of new snow on existing hard ice. We did not need crampons but did rope up for the glacier. On the descent 4-5 folks punched through snow bridges (to their knee or so), one person successfully finding three bridges to punch through. Clearly an over achiever. we were back at the cars by 6pm. The pace was never faster than slow to easy moderate all day long.

it should be noted the route information is WRONG. It is NOT (REPEAT NOT) 22 miles round trip. GPS measurements showed that the true round trip car to car distance was 14.23 miles for our trip. This is a very doable one day glacier climb.
