Whitewater Packraft - Sauk River: White Chuck River to Darrington

4400 CFS, a good flow between the others described here in Mountaineers website trip reports

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Approximately 4400 CFS and dropping while we were on the river.

This report is just to record the river condition at around 4400 CFS on the Sauk near Sauk gauge and 1350 on the Sauk near White Chuck gauge, to go along with the past reports for this stretch at 5800 CFS, 3700 CFS, and 1560 CFS on Sauk near Sauk. This was an excellent flow that offered challenges but wasn't overwhelming. There were some big waves and many rocks were covered by pourovers, which makes them more difficult to identify from the boat for folks less experienced at reading rapids, but the flow wasn't too pushy and it generally wasn't very difficult to make the moves you needed to make. Still probably a III+ river at this flow, but not as rowdy as it sounds like the higher flow experience was.

For parties who are trying to make a decision whether to run White Chuck or Bedal based on the flow, Whirlpool can be scouted from the road to get an idea of how big and fast things are looking, then you can decide which stretch to do based on that.
