The approach had significant snow patches, on both the road and the trail through the forest. We were glad to have a GPX track for routefinding. Some party members said they would have brought different footwear or poles if they had known about the snow. All of the climbing routes at West Wall and Lizard Ledge were snow-free and dry. We did not make it to the East Face but I am guessing that area would also be snow-free and dry.
Eight climbers enjoyed a day of cragging at Keechelus Ridge. Many party members enjoyed visiting a new-to-them location, and all of us enjoyed the gorgeous views of Mount Rainier and many wildflowers around the crag. We climbed all but one of the routes at West Wall and one of the routes at Lizard Ledge. More experienced climbers (including both leaders and participants) helped newer climbers work on developing their skills so it was a productive session for all. We faded a little earlier than we might have due to the heat, but were still able to get in a full day of climbing due to some well-located shade patches. We were glad that one of the leaders brought a sun umbrella that the participants passed around, and some participants shared water with one another when needed.
